That's Just Life

The Backstory…

9/11 brought with it so many horrors, but when the dust settled, it also revealed so much beauty. Previous to this day, I was growing quite cynical about the human race. What I discovered was a depth of compassion, heroism and kindness I had not seen before.

In the photo above, it was just six months after that fateful day. I was invited inside FDNY Ladder Company 3 and while on the second floor, I witnessed the devastating destruction of the fallen two towers. Additionally, I experienced the sorrowful, bittersweet discovery of another body amongst the rubble. It was truly humbling and a day I will never forget.

So, to honor those who were lost and to give voice to this new epiphany of hope and human decency, I decided to capture this moment in time with a song.

Lyrics

I always thought that sanity was something inconspicuous,

Clean of thoughts full of dirtiness,

What has happened to virtuousness, dear?

I dreamed of flower petals and flying doves,

A world where everybody loves,

Oh, God it’s 7:30 wake me up…

Well now there’s nothing left to fear…

Oh, I, oh, I can see what you mean when the dust clears away,

Oh, I, oh, I see all of the beauty that was meant to be.

Light shines a groovy refraction,

Moon, stars line up in perfection,

I love this optical illusion, dear

Well now there’s nothing left to fear…

Oh, I, oh, I can see what you mean when the dust clears away,

Oh, I, yeah, I see all the beauty that was meant to be.

…and if it makes you cry,

That’s alright, that’s just life.

Safely tucked in,

An illusion,

But stand up, stand out,

Who was ever promised tomorrow…?

Well now there’s nothing left to fear…

Oh, I, oh, I can see what you mean when the dust clears away,

Oh, I, oh, I see all of the beauty that was meant to be.

…and if it makes you cry,

That’s alright, that’s just life.

That’s just life.

No promises, of gett’n through,

unscathed,

That’s just life.
